Hanoi has many things – community, charm, culinary creations that have withstood the test of time and a 1000-year-old culture. And……. we can’t forget to mention a beer drinking culture that is 130 years old!

Beer drinking culture first appeared in Hanoi in 1890 with the city’s first beer brewery – established in the main to satiate the thirsts of French soldiers and as an option to Vietnamese workers who found it a tasty and thirst-quenching change to the traditional rice wines that they had been drinking for generations. Bia Hoi – or ‘fresh beer’ was born and has become synonymous with the beer drinking culture in Vietnam even till today. Quickly made, cheap and cold – no wonder many an invention or new idea has been started on the back of sipping a few while perched on a stool in one of Hanoi’s many streets or winding alleyways.

Beer culture in Hanoi for the next 100 years or so was the mainstay of Bia Hoi and Hanoi Beer. This all started to change in the early 1990’s thanks to the cooperation between Vietnamese brewers and their Czech counterparts. Eastern European traditional beer brewing techniques had started to find their way into Vietnam and beer halls started to pop up first in Ho Chi Minh City and not long after Hanoi.

Beer drinking culture in Hanoi experienced its greatest shift since 2015 with the exploding craft beer scene. There is now over 30 different breweries and a new brand seems to be released on almost a daily basis. But best yet is that local brewers are combining the best local ingredients with the usual mainstays to create flavours that are unlike anything that a craft beer connoisseur might expect.

So, what is the beer story and what does all this mean? Quite simply Vietnamese and Hanoians in particular love a good beer and the amber stuff has been flowing here for 130 years. And rather than having to hunt all over Hanoi trying to discover this for yourself you can simply contact Tan and Brett at Hanoi Beer Tour. The street snackers and beer hounds have been voted as having the best beer tour in Hanoi and will take you on the evolutionary beer ride of your life.

Flame grilled chicken

What’s not to love about fresh, flame grilled chicken, marinated in honey, dusted with local spice and served on a stick with an ice-cold beer? Honestly – not much!

Modern life can be complex and quite honestly, I sometimes watch the rapid pace at which the world is changing and wonder why many of the things of yesteryear – from my childhood – are being so rapidly replaced.

It’s the same with food and beer – too many varieties, too many options and too many people playing with recipes that are tried and true and have been satiating people for generations.

Thankfully Hanoi is still, in a lot of respects, a traditional city that has held onto many of the things that have characterised it for so many centuries. One of these is Ga Nuong – uncomplicated, unpretentious and bloody unreal! Honey and spice marinated chicken that tastes even better than it sounds! Satisfying, tasty and real. No need for some artificial substitute here thank you. Simply placed over an open fire, bbq’d to perfection, plated and ready to eat.

And the best part – the ‘wash down’. An ice-cold beer, that complements the flavours and invokes feelings of sentimentality. Encouraging one to sit a while, and simply watch local life go by.

Tan and Brett not only love this food but live this food. Come and let Hanoi Beer Tour show you where and why Simple is Simply Better.

Upcoming show on CNN reflects Hanoi street life

The Hanoitimes – The best way to explore a city is by wandering through its streets, lanes and alleys.
From French colonial aesthetics to its unique food culture and history, CNN’s ‘Street Life Hanoi’ explores this historic city from a new perspective. Strolling the sidewalks of Vietnam’s stunning capital city, CNN discovers the stories of the streets of Hanoi told by those who know them best, each with their own unique relationship with the city.

Highlights of the 30-minute special include:

The Old Quarter
One of the most unique perspectives to view Hanoi may just be from the seat of a side-car buzzing through the city streets. CNN meets Steve Christensen, an American graphic designer who has lived in Hanoi for over 20 years and gives sidecar tours of the city as his side job. CNN rides along with Steve to get a glimpse of the famous 36 streets and his favorite street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, where dozens of streets are named for specific crafts which were once practiced there.

Ta Hien Street
Beer culture in Hanoi dates to 1890 when the first beer brewing factory was established. CNN meets Tấn, a Hanoi local, and Brett, an Aussie expat in Vietnam, who are known for organizing one of the most popular beer tours in the city teaching locals and visitors about Hanoi’s famous cold brew Bia hoi, a beer for the people with a history dating back to wartime. CNN visits Ta Hien Street with Tấn and Brett to get to the bottom of the beer history.

Cha Ca Street
Vietnam’s incredible food culture is pride worthy. In Hanoi, cha ca is an iconic and delicious fish dish not to be missed – in fact there is an entire street named after it. CNN travels along Cha Ca Street in search for this local specialty with one of the Hanoi’s top chefs and enters the doors of Chả Cá Lã Vọng, the city’s oldest restaurant.

Hoang Hoa Tham (Bonsai Street)
This tree lined street with plenty of shade, named after nationalist hero Hoang Hoa Tham, is said to be one of Hanoi’s prettiest streets. It spans over 3 kilometres and is full of local vendors selling flowers and bonsai trees. CNN visits the street with local resident Vân Anh, who used to cycle through the road every day on her way to secondary school. ‘Street Life Hanoi’ also visits the bird market and the Saturday antique market to see why this street is considered Hanoi’s prettiest.

Trang Tien Street
As one of the most famous streets in Hanoi during the French colonial period, this street was once called the Champs Elysees of Indochina. On this street, the famous Opera House exemplifies the French influence, and it is said that Charlie Chaplin spent his honeymoon in the Metropole Hotel which is right off the street. CNN gets a guided tour of the area with very special tour guides: Hanoi Kids, a free tour group which is run by student volunteers.

‘Street Life Hanoi’ is produced by CNN Vision, the global creative production powerhouse of CNN International, which brings the world’s breath-taking diversity into cinematic focus, telling stories that inspire audiences around the world.
